When preparing for your upcoming travel assignment, taking proactive steps is a key to success. Make packing for your next travel assignment a breeze with these tips that we’ve put together for you:

Organize Your Closet

Start by consolidating what you have in your closet. Set aside some time to go through what’s in your closet to sort through what you’d like to keep and what you’re ready to part with. Donating your clothes to local non-profit organizations is a great motivator for parting with items. Here are a few guidelines to help you on deciding whether or not you should keep

  • If you have more than one of an item, you could donate one of them to a local organization
  • Consider donating items that you haven’t worn more than once
  • A general rule of thumb to deciding on whether or not you should keep an item is to think of the amount of times you’ve worn it in the last 6 months

By cleaning out your closet and keeping the items that you use regularly, you’ll reduce the amount of time it takes when it comes to packing for your assignment. Rather than searching through an abundance of items for your trip, you’ll know that whatever you choose to bring on your trip will be used.

Consider Before You Buy

Bringing new things in…ask yourself some simple questions:

  • Is this a “need” or a “want?”
  • Do I have the space and budget for this?
  • Will I regret not buying it if I walk away now?

If you do need to buy something, make sure it has some versatility to it. For instance, choose to purchase furniture that has dual purposes, such as a coffee table that also has extra storage. This will eliminate the need to buy more when you consider the life and functionality of the items that you are being. Also, make sure that the items you are buying are of high quality so that you won’t need to replace them as often, if ever.

Stay Clutter Free

Creating a goal to sort through your items every 6 months is a great way to make sure that you have what you need. Taking the time to go through what you have will help you to determine what you need. This can be eye-opening discovery as you realize what you do and don’t utilize on a regular basis. Perhaps set a goal to donate one bag of items to a local group every 6 months. Also, making sure that you have a designated area to store or display your new item is just as important. Consider if this is an item that will be easy to bring along to assignments if needed.

Another easy way to declutter is the “one in, one out” rule. For example, if you buy a new shirt, donate one of your existing shirts. Following this rule of thumb is a great proactive approach to keeping clutter at a minimum. In turn, this will also result in a less stressful experience when packing for your assignment.
