How to Search for School-Based Jobs During the Pandemic

It can certainly seem daunting to search for a new job while navigating life during the pandemic. However, there are proactive steps to take when finding a new position, even in the midst of challenging times such as these. School-based professionals are adapting to virtual job positions more and more in order to acclimate to the new normal. Update Your Resume

As you begin your job search, it’s important to take the time to update your resume to show case your experience. There are certainly key components that you’ll need to pay attention to in order to make sure that your resume is as effective as possible. When updating your resume, be sure to follow these key pointers:

  • Keywords – Read through the job description of the opportunity you’re applying for and notice the keywords that the employer includes in the description. Use these keywords to include crucial information such as your skills, credentials and experience. 
  • Include Relevant Information – Typically, you only need to include the last 10-15 years’ worth of experience on your resume. Read through your resume and decide what you can remove. To that point, also take time to update any additional experience you have received, making sure that you include points that are directly relevant to the job you are applying for. 
  • Include Achievements – When formatting the points on your resume, be sure to write them in such a way that shows what you accomplished. By highlighting cause and effect, you are showing what you bring to the table as an indispensable employee. 
  • Proofread – Writing and reworking your resume can certainly be a time-consuming process however it’s crucial to take the extra time to read through it. Investing the time to work on your resume will be in vein if you end up with misspellings or grammatical errors throughout it.

Practice Interviews

You’ve heard the age old saying of “practice makes perfect,” and when it comes to practice interviews, this is no exception. Make time to go through potential interview questions and think through your answers ahead of time. Be sure to gain an idea of how you would answer so that your respond doesn’t come across as rehearsed. The key to head into your interview prepared, not memorized. Jot down some notes to help you remember your points. Try having a friend or family member interview you so that you can verbally practice as well. Practice ahead of time will help you to walk into your interview with confidence, knowing that you are prepared with your answers so that you are able to form more of a connection with your interviewer.
